Sun Protection 101


It’s that time of year when warmer temperatures lead to outdoor activities. We find ourselves outside at the park, on a mountain trail, or at the pool or beach. Whatever your summer activity, make sure to take care of your skin and protect it from damaging sun exposure.


The right sunscreen used properly is a key factor in protecting your skin. Items such as lip gloss, makeup and lotions that are labeled with SPF protection are also considered sunscreens. Here are 8 facts about protecting yourself against harmful rays from the sun provided in materials by the Personal Care Product Council.


1.       Stay in the shade when possible, and wear sun protective clothing like hats and sunglasses

2.       Use sunscreen every day all year round, even if it is a cloudy day.

3.       SPF stands for sun protection factor and indicates the estimated time you will be protected from the sun. If you burn in 10 minutes without using sunscreen, an SPF 15 sunscreen will provide you with protection for approximately 15 times longer or 150 minutes.

4.       Look for a sun screen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays (broad spectrum protection). Many sunscreens do not protect against UVA radiation.

5.       The FDA recommends reapplying sunscreen on exposed skin every 2 hours – or more frequently if swimming or perspiring.

6.       Even people with darker skin pigmentation should wear sunscreen.

7.       You should have your skin checked at least once a year. UVA rays can cause sun spots, wrinkles and pre-mature aging.

8.       Although skin care products can help reduce the appearance of damage to the skin, they do not compare to preventing sun damage in the first place.
